What is a customs warehouse – and when does it pay off?

A customs warehouse is a storage location authorised by the main customs office where goods from non-EU countries are stored without customs duty and import VAT becoming due. The charges arise only at the moment you release the goods for free circulation – and only for the quantity you actually withdraw. If the goods are re-exported, for example to Ukraine, Kazakhstan or Switzerland, no import charges arise in the EU at all.

This pays off in three typical situations: you import larger quantities and do not want to pre-finance the charges all at once; on arrival you do not yet know which part will stay in the EU and which will move on to third countries; or you want to keep goods near Berlin and clear them only when they are called off. For traders with customers in Eastern Europe and Central Asia in particular, a customs warehouse on the A10 is a very practical transhipment point.

Customs warehouse, bonded warehouse or free warehouse? In EU customs law since the Union Customs Code (2016) there is only the customs warehouse and the free zone; “bonded warehouse” is the everyday English term for the same thing. If you are looking for a bonded warehouse near Berlin, an authorised customs warehouse like ours is exactly that: it is open to third parties – you store under our authorisation without needing one of your own.

Official description of the procedure: Customs warehousing at German Customs.

Our customs warehouse services in Ludwigsfelde

Pallet storage of non-Union goods in the customs warehouse near Berlin

Storage of non-Union goods

Pallet storage in the authorised customs warehouse with no time limit. Inventory management in the WMS with real-time access to your stock; partial withdrawals, repacking and picking are possible without the goods losing their customs status. A total of 8,000 m² of warehouse space is available; how much of it is under customs supervision depends on the current volume of customs goods and is adjusted flexibly. Standard Euro pallets go into pallet racking, bulky and heavy goods into block storage on the floor. Heated and unheated, dry covered areas are available side by side – where your goods go is decided by their requirements.

Authorised consignee – end T1 directly at our site

Your truck does not have to go to the customs office: as an authorised consignee we end transit procedures (T1/NCTS) at our ramp. Without this status the vehicle first drives to the customs office and waits there for clearance within office hours; if it arrives in the evening or on a Friday afternoon, clearance moves to the next working day. Depending on arrival time this costs several hours up to a whole day per vehicle. With us the truck is unloaded directly, during our opening hours and independent of appointments at the office.

Customs clearance import and export

Release for free circulation, export declaration, T1 documents for onward shipping to third countries, preference and origin certificates. You supply invoice and packing list – we take care of ATLAS and NCTS.

Excise warehouse for wine and spirits

For alcoholic beverages we additionally operate a tax warehouse: storage under duty suspension, EMCS handling, withdrawal in partial quantities – ideal for importers who keep their range near Berlin.

Consolidation and onward shipping

Collect consignments from different suppliers in the customs warehouse and ship them on consolidated – after release for free circulation within the EU or under T1 to Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. We organise pre- and on-carriage with our own and partner vehicles.

Bonded warehouse, free warehouse or customs warehouse – what is the difference?

What does storage in the TRID GmbH customs warehouse cost?

The price depends on pallet format, storage period and customs procedure: storage per Euro pallet and week, handling per pallet, customs entry and removal per operation, T1 transit document (NCTS) and import clearance per document.
